Lappet

1725-1750 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Joined pair of bobbin lace lappets. Square ended with a linking cap frill. Worked largely in half stitch or in very open cloth work, some point de neige fillings, and raised outlinings of the Brussels type. The parts of the pattern are joined by brides picotées.

Large-scale pattern of scrolling baroque leaves and flowers. The lace appears to have been cut all round and it is probable that the lappets and frills were cut from a large flounce. The scale of the design and the coarseness of the thread suggests that the lace is Brabant rather than Brussels.
