Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Doublet for an older boy or young man of black woollen broadcloth and interlined with linen; the laps lined with black broadcloth, the rest of the doublet with scarlet broadcloth. It has a 2⅝–inch (6.6 cm) standing collar, ½-inch (1.25 cm) deep shoulder wings and curving 2-piece sleeves, with a high, pointed waist and 4 large, deep laps. The centre back seam is open above the waist, and the inside sleeve seams are open. The small belly pieces under the lining are made of bents and layers of linen. A woven lace, 9/16-inch (1.3 cm) wide, of black silk twill, in short lengths edging in fringed knots, is applied in horizontal rows on the fronts below the waist and laps. Beside the sleeve openings, one end of 15 lengths of silk lace extends into a loop for buttons. On the left front, the silk lace is sewn around the 12 buttonholes. On the collar, there are 6 button loops of braided black silk. The buttons have a large wooden core covered with black silk thread; only fragments of 17 button remain. A lacing band of linen covered with black silk taffeta is sewn inside the waist, with 28 worked eyelets. There is a linen tab with a metal eye sewn to the inside of each front at the waist.
