Man’s waistcoat of brown/white changeable [shot] watered silk, partially interlined with linen, lined with cream silk taffeta. It has a round neckline bound with ⅜-inch (8 mm) wide dark brown silk grosgrain ribbon, curving 2-piece sleeves and wide skirts below the waist. The centre back seam is open below the hip and the side seams between the hip and 2 inches (5 cm) above the hem. There is a horizontal pocket on each front with a narrow pocket flap, with 12 worked buttonholes and 12 corresponding buttons with a wooden core covered with brown and white silk thread; 23 remain. There are 44 worked buttonholes on the left front edge with corresponding buttons; 26 remain. Each sleeve has 5 worked buttonholes and 5 corresponding buttons.

The waistcoat was altered for fancy dress in the late 19th century; ‘van dyke’ cuffs of lace were added to each sleeve.
