Child's ensemble

Ensemble
1800-1870 (made), 1870-1879 (made)
Place of origin

T.109 - Waistcoat. Blue faced cloth, faced with red silk damask and lined with printed cotton in brown and white. The waistcoat is embroidered down each front edge with a floral design in applied black silk braid, and trimmed on all edges and seams with similar braid. Braid-covered buttons and matching braid loops are not intended to fasten.

T109A - Waistcoat. Blue and plum-coloured face cloth lined with white cotton. A narrow border of green woolen material has been added under the button loops on the left front. Seams and edges trimmed with brown and black wool braid. Embroidered on each side of the front with a scrolling pattern in applied black braid. The buttons were probably at one time covered in black braid. Braid loops on the left side are not intended to fasten.

T.109B - Jacket. White felt embroidered with applied navy blue and white wool braid. The jacket is above waist length, collarless, with unseamed sleeves attached at the shoulders only, and unlined.

T.109C - breeches. Blue face cloth to match jacket (B), bound at the waist with plum-coloured cotton and threaded with a drawstring. The trousers are of the normal Turkish type, consisting of straight leg pieces joined to a straight, very wide centre piece giving exaggerated fullness between the legs. Seams and bottom of legs finished with black wool braid. The leg openings seem to have been cut and left unfinished or badly finished so that they fit round the thighs.

T.109D - Belt. Handwoven in coloured wools (red, green, yellow, blue and white) with fringed ends.

T.109E to F - Gaiters. Pair of white felt thigh-length gaiters. Seams and edges coarsely embroidered in red and green silk. There is an open slit in the back seam above the heel. The feet have been torn and mended. Tops finished with white wool braid and loop for fastening. Lower edge finished with yellow silk braid with a metal button at each side of the foot.

T.109H - Hat. Round cap of red felt, embroidered in coloured silks with silver braid and gilt cord and sequins. There is a tassel of gilt threads and sequins.

T109I & J - Shoes. Dark red leather with white piping and stitching. Flat leather soles with upturned toes finished with black wool pompoms.

Object history
A note in the register about the provenance of the oufit says: "This collection was said to have been acquired by the donor's aunt when cruising by yaught in the Mediterranean, paticularly on the eastern shore of the Adriatic, in the late 1870s. (T.109 to 118-1871).|"

A note in the register says: "This suit has been altered (breeches T.109C) and added to (gaiters and belt). It would appear that this was done, not to make a fancy dress or dressing up costume, but by a Greek family who wanted their child to wear 'national' dress (as distinct from a family where these garments were worn as a matter of course). The alterations and additions are certainly of later date than the original garments."

The register description suggests the original and newer elements of the outfit:

"T.109 - Waistcoat. Could have been worn with the waistcoat and trousers T109 A & C as an alternative to the jacket T.109B.

T.109A - Waistcoat. This waistcoat matches the trousers (C) and could have been worn (over a shirt) by itself or under the waistcoat (T.109) or the jacket (B) or both.

T.109B - Jacket. Could have been worn with the waistcoat and breeches (A & C).

T.109C - Breeches. The breeches would traditionally have been knee length and have apparently been shortened from the top, although the top band itself appears to be original. The leg opening have been cut and left unfinished or badly finished so that they fit round the thighs.

T.109D - Belt. Not part of the original suit (see note above).

T.109 E & F - Gaiters. Not part of the original suit (see note above)."
