Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A part of a band from a linen cloth. Egyptian, ca. AD300-500. Tapestry woven in mainly purple/dark blue wool (small details in red wool) and undyed linen (both s-spun). One side ends in selvedge with the other edges having been cut away. On the right end of the band is a solid square of purple which is placed at the end of a row of four circles. Each circle contains an animal (lion, dog, rabbit, gazelle?) with red detail for three tongues and what looks like a collar. Each animal sits within a border that is circular at each end and with a scalloped border at top and bottom. At the centre of the top and bottom edges a knop protrudes. This is then within a circle of purple with some lined decoration around the animal. Between each of the four circles is floral decoration. The band decoration (ie: four circles and solid area) is edged with a reverse scallop border terminating in a circle with a dot/small letter c in each centre. Some slit tapestry. There is some staining and holes.
