Place of origin |
A part of a square panel of tapestry woven wool and linen. Egytpian, ca. AD300-600. Purple wool and undyed linen. Approx. 12x40 tpc. In the centre is a circle containing a naked man riding a horse. His left hand is raised. Above the horse's head is a lantern-like object. This circle sits within a square with dots in the spandrels. The square sits within a bigger square and is bordered with different shapes (a cross within a diamond; a spade shape within a tree; a fish; a crab; a diamond with a smaller diamond at its centre) This larger square is bordered with two lines on two sides and a dotted line at the base (the top is missing); a connected row of crosses/cresting lies around the outside of the square. There are holes across the piece and some staining. The nude warrior symbolised a fight with the bestial side of the self and the raised hand was a gesture of blessing or protection.
