A tapestry woven roundel, roughly cut out, probably from an undyed woollen tunic. Egyptian; Oxyrhynchus, ca. AD400-600. The roundel is of purple and white (?) wool, S-spun. The central image is of a man riding an animal, his left hand raised. The animal is jumping over something. This is surrounded by a circle and then 14 icons witin individual circles. the icons are of animals, birds, faces and flora. The raised hand was an ancient gesture of blessing or protection.

Object history
Objects T.115-1922 to T.158-1922 purchased for £25, from Professor Flinders Petrie. They were found at the BSAE excavations of Oxyrhynchus that year and offered to the museum directly by Petrie, though the money was to be passed to the BSAE.
