Textile Fragment

ca. AD500-900 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A square panel of woven wool and linen on a woven linen backing. Egyptian, ca. AD500-900. Possibly from a furnishing. The backing is of undyed linen, has holes and is stained. There are some double warps; 11x13 tpc (sys. 1 x sys. 2). Stitching that holds the decorative panel onto the backing can be seen on this side. The decorative side is in poor condition. Cross arms and other motifs have been woven in linen and filled in with red and green wool. The green wool creates small Coptic crosses in the arms of the larger crosses (Xs). In between the large crosses are other Coptic crosses of a floral nature. The panel is sewn to the backing around the edges, with a whip stitch. One corner is stained.
