EVENING DRESS, spotted net and silk taffeta French, Paris, Lanvin-Castillo, 1959-60 Lanvin-Castillo excelled in the creation of exuberant and feminine evening attire. In the 1950s it was fashionable to wear off-the-shoulder or strapless dresses which meant that the designer had to be skilled in the construction and fitting of boned foundations to which the outer dress was attached. This bodice has net stretched over taffeta and a further swathe of net is gently and horizontally pleated over the bosom. In an elegant variation on the full skirt the net is gathered into the waist and then caught up to form a bouffant puff over the hips, from where it falls in free pleats to the hem. The dress has a matching shawl. Worn and given by Lady Alexandra Dacre of Glanton The Cecil Beaton Collection T.292-1974(1983-84)
