Napkin of linen damask. Boldly diapered pattern of squares repeated four times across the width of the napkin. The type of square alternates vertically. There is a wide diapered outer border.

The diaper is based on a satin of 5 and is woven in strong slightly coarse linen.

The napkin is one of five acquired by the donor, of which one is dated 1786. All came from the Hope family. It is marked in cross-stitch in one corner 'AEH' with, possibly, an indistinct number below.
