Napkin of linen damask. Boldly diapered pattern of squares repeated four times across the width of the napkin. The type of square alternates vertically. There is a wide diapered outer border.
The diaper is based on a satin of 5 and is woven in strong slightly coarse linen.

Object history | Registered File number 1987/2100. The napkin is one of five acquired by the donor, of which one is dated 1786. All came from the Hope family. It is marked in cross-stitch in one corner 'AEH' with, possibly, an indistinct number below. |
