Physical description

Valance of roller-printed cotton striped with pinkish cream alternating with white stripes on which is printed a pattern with fanciful Turkish scenes in brown-maroon. A view of Constantinople appears above a girl offering fruit to a parrot with two peacocks below. In the next stripe is a bearded Turk smoking a hookah is substituted for the girl. Between the main scenes these is a bouquet of flowers in the European taste of ca. 1840.

Registered File number 1986/959.
There was a very strong French influence in Turkey at this time (ca. 1840) and clearly some of the influences were reciprocal. This textile has been copied in Mulhouse for the 1986 Tissunique range.
