Napkin

1795 (dated)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Napkin of linen damask, coarsely woven, and with a plain outer border. A broad inner border has a simple bird eye pattern and a floral central field on which are birds and at each end ‘St.St.1795’. Diaper border.

There are two point repeats in the width. The cloth is loosely woven in damask based on a satin of 8. The decoupure is 6 and thus the curved lines are hardly curved but stepped. Without the woven date the style suggests an earlier period.
