Place of origin |
Napkin of linen damask. With two scenes in point repeat from the parable of the Prodigal Son. In the lower scene, the son takes leave of his father, who holds a bag of money. Houses are in the background flanked by ewers and a jar which belong to the scene above, where the Prodigal sits at a table between woman holding cards. A plaster ceiling with pendant bosses is above them, and over the Prodigal's head hangs a lamp decorated with antlers.
With a border and at each corner are four linked rosettes. Along all four sides is a scroll forming medallions enclosing birds and flowers. Bands of chequerboard edging are broader and on a larger scale at the top and lower edges than at the sides. Mark in fawn thread.
