Shawl

1830-1869 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Shawl of black machine lace. Semi-circular shawl made with a round neck and straight front edges which slant slightly outwards, and a lower hem cut into large vandycks.

Made on a Pusher lace machine. Traversed twist-net ground, the pattern imitates half-stitch work with 'honeycomb' fillings. The thick outlining threads are hand run and the raw edges have been whipped over and decorated with a line of picots. The lace is fairly course and the over-all effect of the pattern is blurred.

The neck and front edges are decorated with a narrow border of leaves and parallel lines, crossed along the neck edge by floral sprays extending into the main ground. The vandycks of the hem are defined by a deep border with vertical motifs projecting into the centre from each point. Delicate sprays of flowers extend from the upper edge of the border to fill the centre.
