Object history
The workmanship of this dress is very rough and the bodice is unlined. It was suggested at time of acquisition that this might have been a show model, as the unboned bodice would have made the fit slightly more versatile, and the general effect has been compared to the "saggy strapless dresses" in a 1948 issue of L'Officiel.
Production
Although this dress bears a Balmain label, it does not appear sufficiently good quality to be a couture dress. It may have been a show model.
