Physical description

Summer evening suit comprising a jacket, skirt and bodice. Embroidered white silk gazar jacket with purple, green, white and blue trailing floral design with bead accents, worn over a knife-pleated white silk georgette skirt which has a matching one-shouldered sleeveless bodice in pleated silk georgette to enable it to be worn as an evening dress.
[Jacket] Long sleeved short jacket, single breasted and slightly waisted. White gazar embroidered with a pattern of trailing leafy stems bearing spring-like flowers in green, yellow, purple and blue, and with white beads. In cottons and silks - stem and chain stitched. White lining.
[Skirt] Long and knife pleated georgette skirt, over straight, and with white georgette under the skirt. Fastens with a zip and hooks and eyes.
[Bodice] Bodice of pleated white georgette. Sleeveless and one shouldered. The left shoulder is left bare. Silk band attached to the bottom edge to tuck into the waistband of the skirt.

Object history note

Made especially for Mrs Sarah McAlpine for summer evening wear, originally as a skirt and jacket. After Mrs McAlpine realised that she wanted to wear the jacket open and occasionally remove it when it was too warm, Dior London made an evening bodice for the skirt to enable it to be worn as an evening dress
