Stays

1770s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Woman’s stays made of ivory silk figured in a diaper pattern, lined with the same silk and bound with ⅜-inch (8 mm) wide yellow silk grosgrain ribbon. The stays have a wide, shallow neckline, pointed front, back and skirts extending below the waist, and fasten at the back. They are cut in 8 pieces and partially boned, with baleen strips running horizontally across the front. A ⅛-inch (2 mm) wide ribbon of silver filé covers the side and back seams. There are 8 worked lacing holes, asymmetrically placed, on each side at the back. The centre front seam is open ⅔ down the front with 8 worked lacing holes on each side, fastened with a ¼ inch (6 mm) wide yellow silk grosgrain ribbon. The shoulder straps each have 2 lacing holes fastening at the back. The dimensions suggest the stays were made half-scale.
