Place of origin |
Woman’s stays of brown linen, lined and interlined with partially bleached linen and reinforced with baleen. They are back-lacing with a high narrow back, no shoulder straps, a wide, decolletage and a point in front, about 4 inches (10 cm) below the natural waist. The stays are cut in 8 pieces and fully boned in stitched channels about 3/16-inch (4 mm) wide, the baleen extending into the skirts below the waist. An area at the upper part of each front is partially boned. There is a ¾-inch (1.8 cm) wide busk at the centre front and a triangular ‘peak’ at the lower half of the centre front created with pasteboard on the inside. A 3/16-inch (4 mm) wide white figured silk ribbon covers the seams. The neckline, armholes and edges of the skirts are bound with linen twill tape. There is a decorative lacing of linen thread at the centre front. A hook is sewn to either side of the centre front. The stays lace at the back with 14 worked eyelets arrange asymmetrically and further reinforced with ½-inch (1.3 cm) wide linen tape.
The linings of individual skirts have been replaced. The lining at the right back has come unstitched, revealing the inside of the boning channels and the stitching of the linen pieces.
