Corset

ca. 1900-1905 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Pair of women's corsets made from pale blue cotton broché with a darker blue floral design and trimmed at the top with white machine-made lace through which are threaded two rows of pale blue silk ribbon. They fasten at the front with a busk with five loops and studs, and at the back are eight white metal bound eyelets for an adjustment tab. The corsets are machine-stitched and lightly boned, probably with spiral steels. There is a tape waistband stitched inside and the bottom and top are bound with tape.

The corsets are short and the back and sides, reach only from the bust to the top curve of the hips, though at the centre front where there remain traces of elastic webbing probably from suspenders, now detached, swoop down to the centre of the belly. In wear, they would give a straight front silhouette.
