Place of origin |
Wool embroidery on cotton and linen, embroidered in satin and stem stitches with speckling and French knots. The curtain is embroidered in monochrome wool of a pinkish red.
The main pattern over the whole field of the curtain is a continuous scrolling design descended from the characteristic Elizabethan design, with the centre of each scroll ending in a pair of flowers. The scroll and the flowers are typically Stuart in character, both in drawing and execution.
At the bottom is a narrow border of a row of cusped niches, each containing a palmate ornament. The flowers and leaves in the scrolls repeat both vertically and horizontally on the alternate principle, which gives a fine decorative effect.
