Underskirt
1860 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Petticoat/underskirt of white cotton and machine woven in a form of quilting into a pattern of alternating bands of plain and scallop-patterned ridges which have a stiffening effect. Waist to ankle length and made in two panels, the front is plain from waist to about knee level and the back has woven stripes from the waist. The petticoat is gathered onto a bias cut waistband, more tightly at the back than at the front. It fastens at the back with two cotton covered grey metal buttons. There is a tuck, halfway down, to adjust the length. As the back woven striped panel is plain at the waist where it is attached to the band, it is probable that the material was woven in standard lengths of patterning approximately 35 inches long. It is machine stitched.
