Kammavaca Manuscript (Kamawa-Sa) With Binding Boards (Kyan)

l. A pair of shaped wood red and gilded lacquer covers sandwich 16 copper plate, red and gilded lacquered leaves. Black lacquer text superimposed. Decoration on covers includes a central Karaweik and kneeling figures perhaps devas, or donor figures, against a foliate background. Similar depictions are found on the two end pages. The covers and pages are pierced with one hole for a tieing cord.

2. A pair of shaped gilded red lacquer wood covers sandwich 10 red and gilded lacquered copper plate leaves, paginated with text superimposed in black lacquer. Ornament on outside of covers included framed depictions of legendary birds (Hintha and karaweik) alternating with praying deva figures. Similar depictions are found on the backs of the end pages.

Brief description
Rare fine example of a gilt and red lacquer copper kamawa-sa (Burmese Buddhist Ms.); pair of wood Kyan (binding boards). Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885). Pali text, tamarind seed script with figurative and foliate decorative motifs. Before 1880.
