Petticoat

ca. 1878 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Petticoat of white linen and trimmed with white ric rac braid. Waist length. With a shaped front panel and three gores at each side. There is a 'v' shaped waist-band and the skirt is arranged so that front is fairly flat and the back more tightly gathered. There is a flounce from the knee to hem which is also more tightly gathered towards the rear. Overlying it, at the back, is another flounce with a double draw tape above to adjust the fullness. Each flounce and the hem is faced and edges with ric rac braid. The garment fastens with a double draw tape attached to the sides of the front waist so that the fullness is pulled to the back. The long seams are French seamed. The garment is machine stitched. Vertical button hole in the centre front of the waist band.
