Holster

ca. 1680-1700 (made)

A decorated holster for a horse pistol designed to be attached to the pommel of a saddle. It comprises a rounded holster cover of pleated embroidered cloth which comes to a short point at the bottom centre. It has a brown linen lining, with a hole in the top for inserting a holster pistol into a leather receptacle beneath. In the centre, an armorial badge representing a blue/black hound with a red tongue, standing with right leg raised, looking backwards, with a crown collar in gold on a background of flames. (A talbot sable/azure, langued gules, passant regardant, ducally gorged or). The whole wreathed in flames on an armorial base of red and white corded bands. The rounded cover is edged with multiple bands of gold braid.
