Pair of Hangings

1890-1895 (designed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Two identical embroidered hangings, both made of two widths of silk with a seam down the middle. The ground is of apricot coloured silk with a repeating embroidered design of lotus flower heads, acanthus leaves with curving flower stems and branches in peach, pink, blues, greens, silver and grey silk. Borders on each side of the hangings show green twining rose stems with roseheads and bell-shaped flowers in pink and peach. There is evidence of a similar lower border, edged with a barber's pole stripe, on both hangings, although this is now badly worn on each panel. Worked mostly in darning stitch, the embroideries also show running stitches and speckling in their design.
