Chasuble

1730-1769 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Chasuble made of several pieces of patterned silk on a starched canvas backing. It is edged with two patterned yellow braids of 0.5 inch and 1 inch width. The wider braid is also stitched on the back to form a cross and on the front as two parallel longitudinal lines. There is a long linen tape sewn on the middle of the canvas lining in the front. Hand-stitched.

The silk is a tissue with a green ground and staggered motifs of large flowers, leaves and berries. The colours are subdued, and employ eleven shades (pink, blue, yellow and black). The repeat incorporates one pink floral group and one blue. The pattern is bound in 3/1 twill. The ground is dark green with an additional cannellé warp flush with short stemmed flowers in a staggered reserve.
