Cope

1908 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Cope cut from five widths of dark, cream-coloured silk damask. The silk is a late 19th century reproduction of a Renaissance silk and is patterned with large-scale pineapple and floral motifs. The cope is not sufficiently long to show a full repeat. The lining is of red silk damask patterned with an all-over design of two alternating floral sprigs, each approx. 8.3cm high.
The orphreys, hood and morse are of blue silk, brocaded with gold thread and patterned with scrolling stems and vine leaves.
On the orphreys, the Holy Monogram is embroidered within medallions with gold thread and patterned with gold thread and cream and green silk in long and short stitches and couched work.
On the morse, the initial 'M' is similarly embroidered.
The hood is embroidered with the figures of the virgin and child within a frame of lilies; applied silks, laid and couched fold thread and cream, green, blue, red, brown and black silk is split, long and short, back and stem stitches.
The cope is edged with a blue, mauve, green and grey silk fringe.
An embroidered label sewn into the back of the neck reads; 'Orate pro anima, Jane Anne Bulman, Quae per Jesum dormit, a.d. IV. Kal. Mai. mcmviii.'
