This poster advertises the appearance of the dancer Liane de Pougy as the spider in L'Araignée d'Or by Jean Lorrain, first produced at the Folies-Bergère, Paris in about 1896. The work of its designer Paul Berthon was greatly influenced by his teacher Eugène Grasset, both artists drawing inspiration from the medieval decorative arts such as tapestries, stained glass and manuscript illuminations. Berthon delighted in the execution of richly patterned compositions, in which intertwining flowers, beasts, and stylized ornament echo medieval design.(1987-2006) |
