Table Cloth

1897 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Large panel made on the curtain net machine in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, 1897. The side and bottom edges are scalloped and bound with cotton tape but the top edge is cut and hemmed by hand, suggesting that the original piece, probably intended as a tablecloth, was cut in half.

The design depicted has a central motif of Victoria's initials VR, the dates 1837 1897, royal crests and flags in a canopy hung with grapes and other fruit. It is surrounded with references to the Empire in the form of tigers, palm trees and other exotic vegetation, with an outer border of roses, thistles and shamrock. There are two trumpeting angels at the top edge.
