Prayer carpet. Blue field with a red prayer niche outlined with yellow. Both are filled with scattered geometric and floral motifs. The weaver's initials 'FK' are woven in the top left corner. The main border has a pale red ground with meandering blue-stemmed vine with multi-coloured bunches of grapes. The inner and outer border contain zigzags - the inner is red and white, the outer is red.
Warp: white wool; Z2S; 16 threads/inch, 60 threads/10 cms; not depressed.
Weft: white wool; 2 and sometimes 3 between each row of knots; 8 sets/inch, 32 sets/10 cms.
Pile: wool, 8 colours: black, white, pale red, red, yellow, green, purple and blue.
Knot: symmetrical tied around two threads; 64/sq. inch, 960/sq. dm.
Side finish: web with red weft.
End finish: upper: 1.5" (3.5 cms) plain weave with red weft with small knotted 'gul' motif in centre. Lower: the same but without the 'gul'. Plaited and knotted fringe at both ends.

Object history | Woven by Fatma Küllú as part of the DOBAG Scheme. Ayvacik was the second co-operative to be established. The weaver calculated the total number of knots to be 146,850. The carpet bears the official DOBAG label which is leather and secured to one corner with a lead seal. Purchased. Registered File number 1994/762. |
