This relief, although now damaged and re-painted, is stylitically related to sculpture from North East Spain produced in the mid-sixteenth century, and recalls particularly the style of the Beaugrant family of sculptors, who originated from the Netherlands, and were active particularly in the Pays Basque and Rioja in the mid-sixteenth century.

Physical description

Relief in painted alabaster representing the Lamentation. Christ lies at the foot of the cross, his head held by the Virgin, while Mary Magdalene kisses his hand; she holds the top of the ointment jar in her right hand, with the jar behind her. Another Mary grasps the cross looking upwards, whild the head of a third is visible behind Mary Magdalene. Two figures with elaborate headdresses(Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus) are placed at either side of the cross. On the left, bare branches of trees on a hillside are carved in relief and painted. A lizard crawls up behind the figure of Mary Magdalene.
