Panel

ca. 1440-1470 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

These are seven panels in bone with traces of gilding and pigment that once formed a casket. The presence of the lute provides independent corroboration for a dating in the middle of the fifteenth century. The instrument is being plucked with the fingers, rather than a quill, a technical innovation developed at precisely this time.
