Place of origin

This relief in gilded stucco depicts Cosimo de' Medici as the Patron of Pisa. In the centre the city of Pisa is shown, personified as a half-kneeling female figure holding a shield, rising at the behest of Cosimo de' Medici who is represented in profile to the right with a baton in his extended right hand. In the left centre foregroun, there is a reclining figure symbolising the River Arno. To the left of the relief there is a group of figures representing the virtues and benefits introduced by Cosimo de' Medici into Pisa and to the right there is a second geoup representing the vices and defects which he expelled.

The composition of this stucco relief is identical with that of a marble relief in the Vatican collections and was probably cast from this object.
