This bust represents Guillaume de Lamoignon (1617-1677), first president of the Parliament of Paris. It was made by, or probably after, François Girardon's original marble bust held at the Louvre and dated 1671. The terracotta model for the bust is in Versailles (Museum Number MV641).
The sculptor and collector François Girardon (1628-1715) was the most important sculptor in France in the last three decades of the 17th century. He was highly regarded by Louis XIV and played a crucial role in the development and dissemination of the classical style in France, as well as Europe.
