This ivory figure group, carved in high relief, representing St. Anne teaching the Virgin, was probably made in France in the style of the mid-17th century, although its style suggests it could be a 19th-century pastiche. The two figures are carved separately and fixed together.

Figure group, ivory in high relief, St Anne teaching the Virgin, French, ca. 1650, or perhaps 19th century.
Physical description
St. Anne seated on a bench holding a scroll instructs the Virgin. The Virgin, her hair dressed in classical fashion, stands beside her, with head bowed, her right foot on a step, and her hands clasped over her chest. A 'velvet pad' mentioned as a support on acquisition (Museum records) does not survive.

Given by Mrs Ellen Hearn, Villa St Louis, Menton in 1923; This and other objects presented at the same time were labelled as the Alfred Williams Hearn gift.
