Place of origin

This ivory relief representing the Virgin and Child is made by John Brammall Shrewsbury. The artist made this reduced version of a plaster cast after the marble relief by the Florentine renaissance artist Desiderio da Settignano, which is also in the Museum (inv. no. A.84-1927). He used the reducing machine invented by his great-uncle Benjamin Cheverton (1794-1876), some of whose works are also in the collection.
