This medallion of carved and pierced boxwood, is made in Greece in the 18th century.
It depicts the story of the Tree of Jesse, containing the Virgin and Child enthroned within a vesica-shaped compartment and surrounded by half-length figures within circles.
In the Old Testament Jesse is described as the father of King David. According to the prophecy of Isaiah, the Messiah would spring from the family of Jesse.
