This is a version of Nolleken's second bust of Charles James Fox which was one of the sculptor's 'stock' pieces. Nollekens is known to have made two busts of the famous statesman during his lifetime, both of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy, one with a wig in 1791 and a second one in 1802. Many replicas of both busts were made, and other versions are recorded at Holland House, Carlton House and Shugborough Hall.
