18th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This base is made of lapis lazuli, porphyry, and Green Genoa marble, and is decorated with ormolu mounts. The sides are set with four small alabaster cameos framed with a narrow copper gilt moulding and bordered by bands of lapis lazuli. Above and below separated by a band of acanthus moulding in ormolu there are squares of porphyry while the whole rests upon a base of green Genoa marble. In the prophyry top is set a cylinder to hold a dowel. The four marble reliefs show The Triumphal entry of an Emperor; a sacrifice before the Capitoline Temple and the Emperor granting Pardon to Conquered Enemies. These three reliefs are taken from three panels now in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome. They represent the Emperor Marcus Aurelius and probably originally came from an arch or monument to the Emperor.

The original panel of the Fourth relief which shows the Emperor Hadrian being received by the Goddess Roma is also in the Palazzo dei Conservatori whence it came in 1594 from an excavation in the Piazza Schiarra. |
