Relief

1567 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This relief representing the Lamentation was made in Castile, in 1567. This is the only piece of Spanish sculpture inscribed with a date in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the inscription also exceptionally reveals the person to whom it belonged, and perhaps for whom it was made. Although the date could have been added later, the style of the relief suggests it was made at about this time.

The Tamayo family seem to have been originally of Catalan orign, but the name was widespread throughout Spain. The relief was cast from a mould, and is almost certainly from the same workshop which produced A.101-1929, although the reliefs differ in size, suggesting they are not a pair.

Papelón (Papier-Maché), was used in Spain during the 16th century, notably for early pasos (processional groups); most no longer exist, but along those which have survived is the crucifix figure by Marcos Cabrera (active 1575-1581) owned by the Brotherhood of the Expiration, Seville.
