This is a life-size statuette of St. Sebastian made in South Netherlands, in the second half of the 17th century, by a follower of the sculptor Artus Quellinus II (b. 1625; d. 1700). It is believed that the figure was originally painted.
There is another version in the Musée Communal at Brussels in the same scale in unpainted wood. In the church of St James (Antwerp), is a reduced version (ca. 50 cm) in unpainted wood.

Physical description

The Saint stands with his right foot slightly advanced, his right arm raised and his left behind his back. He is naked except for drapery round his loins. One end of the drapery falls behind his legs, the other is carried up over his right arm. His arms and one foot are bound to the stump of an oak tree which terminates in foliage above his head. Probably originally painted.
