The Angel is shown descending in a cloud from the right with right arm raised, towards the Virgin, who kneels in right profile at the base of the relief. To her right, also in the foreground, are two putti with garlands of lilies, roses and other flowers. In the clouds above are ten putti or cherub heads, and at the top is the God the Father with a triangular nimbus, floating in a horizontal position with his right arm on a globe which is supproted on teh left by a winged angel. On the globe is the dove. Rays from the globe pour down in the form of striated lines on the scene below.

Sketch model in terracotta
Possibly by Angelo De’Rossi (1671-1715)
This relief and the other shown nearby are both models for the same altarpiece, the other (A.57-1953) showing the design at a less evolved stage of development. They were at one time thought to be early projects by Filippo della Valle for his altarpiece of the same subject in Sant’Ignazio, Rome, but there style and handling do not correspond with that of della Valle, and they are composed in the reverse sense to that altarpiece. The handling is strikingly similar to that in a sketch model now shown in San Francisco (De Young memorial Museum), for the statue of Pope Alexander VIII by the Genoese sculptor Angelo de’Rossi, and the relief style compares closely with that of de’Rossi’s marble relief on the tomb of Alexander VIII in Saint Peter’s Rome. It seems possible that they are models by de’Rossi for an altarpiece which was projected but never executed.

Object history | Purchased in Florence (Bruschi, £170 14s. 4d.). Stated by the vendor to have been procured from Cortona, and to have been framed in a moulding identical with that of A. 57-1953. Historical significance: A. 57-1953 and this piece are alternative sketch models for a single altarpiece, this one being the later of the two designs. |
