Object history | The original mould for this cup and saucer probably dated from around 1800, at which time the finished pieces would have been decorated with painting and gilding. Such moulds continued in use from the 1850s onwards, beginning with the Second Empire (1852-1870), and a range of both ornamental and useful wares were made and left white as part of a philosophy that saw decoration as an interference with the purity of the natural material. Production of either completely plain or lightly decorated wares continued well into the 1870s. |
