Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Little is known about Faugeron & Dupuis who were, possibly, a decorating firm rather than a manufacturer. Their premises were in rue du Faubourg, St Denis, Paris, from where this vase and its pair were purchased. In the catalogue to the international exhibition, Paris, 1867, in which these vases were shown, the company was advertised as exhibiting 'porcelain; decorated porcelain and earthenware'. Naturalism was a recurring 19th century theme which was condemned by critics as unsuitable and inappropriate at the Great Exhibition held in London in 1851. Nevertheless it survived in various forms in the painterly, full-blown style shown here in the 1860s.
