Born in Japan, Hiroshi Suzuki studied at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo from 1982 to 1988. He came to Britain in 1994 to study silversmithing and metalwork at the Camberwell College of Art before doing a post graduate degree at the Royal College of Art in goldsmithing, silversmithing, metalwork and jewellery.
In 1999 he won the gold medal at the Chongju International Craft Competition in Korea. He was selected for this distinction from 1047 entries submitted from 13 different countries.
Physical description
The vase of Britannia silver rises from a small, flat circular base. The outline of the body swells upwards and outwards and towards the middle and then recedes inwards towards the narrow concave throat with its asymmetric, everted lip. The wall of the vase is decorated with a continuous series of irregular, concentric ridges and channels. The surface, both internally and externally is left softly planished with the hammer marks still visible and given a matt, white finish.

London hallmarks for 2000. Stamped in the centre of the base in a straight line, the sponsor’s mark, RCA (the Royal College of Art), the figure of the Britannia, the numerals 958, the standard of purity, the leopard’s head for the London Assay Office and the Millennium mark.
