Ewer of porcelain painted with red, black and buff-coloured enamels. Ovoid body with a long narrow neck, trefoil mouth and angular loop handle. On the front of the body are figures of a young man and woman in Ancient Greek costume. Round the shoulder is a band of black and red check-pattern. The neck is painted with palmettes on scrolled stems in three panels, in black on a buff ground, and the mouth has a border of foliage outside and dots inside in black on red.

Physical description
Ewer of porcelain painted with red, black and buff-coloured enamels. Ovoid body with a long narrow neck, trefoil mouth and angular loop handle. On the front of the body are figures of a young man and woman in Ancient Greek costume. Round the shoulder is a band of black and red check-pattern. Label for 'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900', Gallery 101, de-canted March 2017: '24 Ewer Based on Greek Forms About 1850-60 From the 1830s several Parisian factories made porcelain similar to this vase. It was bought by the Museum of Practical Geology in London as an example of the 'mineral wealth of the country and its application to the useful purposes of life'. The decoration derives from a famouse Greek vase in the collection of Sir William Hamilton, which had earlier inspired Josiah Wedgwood.
