Fragment, possibly from a mug, fritware, the upper section with pronounced rib, glazed and painted in polychrome enamels with a courtier alternating with palmettes above arabesques and trefoils, beneath a dotted band edging a Kufic-style border, in pale green, iron-red and blue, outlined in black with details in white, heightened with gold on the courtiers shoulders and above the palmette. Crazed surface.

Object history
The Museum Registers record "Fragment of a Vessel, of enamelled white earthenware, painted in colours and decorated with gilding. Found in the ruins of Rhages (Rhé) [Rayy] destroyed in the 12th century. Persian... bought along with Nos. 1537 to 1539-1903). Painted with the figure of a woman, foliated devices, and part of a simulated Arabic inscription.' It is noted in script that it was purchased along with 1537 to 1539-1903, from 'Mr. Neury, Queens Hotel, 104 Oxford Street'.
