C.33 &A&B-1910 gift: Mr J.H. Fitzhenry, Esq The soup tureen with its cover and lobed oval platter are decorated with red and blue peonies on a white ground. This type of decoration is derived from Chinese famille rose motifs, in particular those made in the K’ien Long period(1736-1795), around the middle of the 18th century (see, for example, MORENA 2005, p. 310, n. 266). This type of floral decoration is a prototype of the kind that was later known at Doccia as the “tulip motif” (CASPRINI 2000, p. 180-183) and consists in a series of fire-red peonies with unusually jagged edges. The colour combination of bright red, periwinkle blue, emerald green, and small quantities of brown is indicative of a production around 1750. The shape of the dish, which is influenced by the silverware of the same era and the incised marks are also typical of this period: the incised numbers can be found on some porcelain objects made in the earliest years of the factory and also on some statuettes made at the end of the First Period (GINORI LISCI 1963, p. 322; A. d’Agliano, in LE PORCELLANE ITALIANE A PALAZZO PITTI 1986, p. 32, n. 9).Of particular interest is the shape of the tureen which is characteristic of the production at Doccia up until around 1755. The shape of the handles on the tureen is rare; normally this type of soup tureen has curved handles (see, for example, A. d’Agliano, in ITALIAN PORCELAIN 2013, p. 171, cat. 76; GINORI LISCI 1963, plate XXIII). The back of the dish is decorated with flowering vines in red as was used on the original models in oriental porcelain. A soup tureen with a similar decoration with gilded mounts is published in GINORI LISCI 1963, plate XIV.
