Historical context
Originally modelled by Kändler as a snuff box in May 1737, when he recorded in his work book that he had finished a snuff box in the shape of a wine-maker's basket of grapes (see Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky, Boites en Porcelaine des manufactures europeennes au 18e siecle, 1985, cat. 188, reproducing a box very similar to 939-1882). This box is fitted with a mirror inside the lid, and must have been intended for cosmetic patches.
