STANDING TOASTER Wrought iron England; 18th century This toaster would have been used in front of a raised hearth or grate. The prongs fitted into the sliding back secured the meat, and the plate carrier underneath would have supported a dish to catch the dripping juices. More elegant examples of this type were used in 18th-century drawing rooms and parlours for toasting bread and spiced buns. Museum No. 4-1893(07/1994)
